McIlroy Flings Club and Smashes Tee Marker in Narrow Oakmont Escape
Rory McIlroy’s temper boiled into the ugly here at the 125th US Open on Friday evening as he first hurled his club 30 yards and then, five holes later, violently smashed up a tee marker. It is fair to say that the Northern Irishman’s euphoria after completing the career grand slam two months ago has been well and truly drained.
Oakmont can do that to a player. McIlroy’s playing partner Shane Lowry was so exasperated by the experience that on his way to a 78 and a 17-over total - and needless to say, a missed cut - that he forgot to mark his ball on the green. Lowry knew it was a penalty shot, but did not care and laughed. There was absolutely no mirth from his countryman.
On the par-five 12th, McIlroy pushed his second shot and so the driving iron flew after his ball, the world No 2’s face flushing in anger. On the drivable 17th, he pulled it and took out his fury on the marker that was destroyed in the process. It was hardly an edifying sight but at least served to sum up his f…
