CS Duale Announces: SHA to Settle Hospital Claims by the 14th Monthly Deadline

The newly appointed Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, has guaranteed health care providers that starting from now, the Social Health Authority (SHA) will handle and pay all hospital claims by the 14th day of every month.

The objective of this move is to simplify payment processes and ease the financial pressure on health care institutions.

On Tuesday, Duale formally took office, succeeding his fellow Environment Ministry colleague Deborah Barasa.

On his inaugural day, Duale presented an extensive plan aimed at transforming the nation’s healthcare sector, emphasizing fiscal responsibility, better service provision, and superior patient treatment.

He restated the administration's dedication to maintaining effectiveness and availability in community health care facilities.

Following President William Ruto's instructions, Duale stated that there would be enhanced financial backing for intensive care and oncology treatments.

Starting from April 1, 2025, the rebates for ICU and HDU beds will increase to Sh28,000 per day.

Furthermore, oncology patients will gain improved access to cancer care through an upgraded treatment package priced at Sh550,000 per person.

In response to ongoing employee grievances, Duale committed to expediting resolution of all outstanding personnel matters within the ministry.

He stressed working together with all parties involved to create environmentally friendly answers for the industry.

To bolster the availability of crucial medications and medical supplies, the CS established a lofty objective to boost the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) order fulfillment rate to 90 percent.

Duale revealed that the government has set aside Sh1.5 billion in the Supplementary Budget for the purpose of strengthening KEMSA’s capital.

Moreover, talks are currently in progress for a Sh5 billion credit facility aimed at ensuring commodity stability, bolstering local production, and facilitating large-scale purchases to lower expenses.

Duale additionally committed to tackling systematic inefficiencies within the healthcare service delivery.

An essential component of this plan involves setting up a completely functional round-the-clock TaifaCare call center, reachable through the free dial-in number 147, designed to address questions from both patients and providers.

In anticipation of digital transformation, the CS outlined plans to convert all public health institutions into digital formats by October 1, 2025. This initiative aims to enhance the overall efficiency and availability of services across the country.
